Ageing Wisely

A Group Program for Overcoming Worry and Low Mood in Older Adults

Welcome to the Ageing Wisely Group Program, a 12-week course specifically designed for older adults seeking to navigate and manage feelings of worry and low mood. We understand that worry and low moods are a part of life, but when they persist for weeks or months, it's essential to address and manage these emotions effectively.

Course Structure: 

Our program is grounded in evidence-based cognitive-behavioural techniques, developed and researched by the Centre for Emotional Health at Macquarie University in Sydney. The 12 weekly sessions, each lasting 2 hours, are crafted to provide a supportive and educational environment for participants to learn new skills and reinforce those acquired in the previous week.

Course Dates: 

When: Monday afternoon 1-3pm.  First group on Monday 2nd September 2024 running for 12 consecutive weeks (excluding public holidays)

The Ageing Wisely Group Program covers a comprehensive range of topics, aiming to enhance emotional well-being and equip participants with valuable coping mechanisms. The program includes:

  1. Psychoeducation on Anxiety and Depression: Understanding the nature of anxiety and depression in the context of ageing.
  2. Understanding Ageing: Dispelling common myths about ageing to promote a healthier mindset.
  3. Motivation to Change: Exploring the motivation behind embracing positive changes in one's life.
  4. Mood Monitoring: Developing skills to monitor and understand mood patterns.
  5. Scheduling Pleasant Events: Incorporating enjoyable activities into daily life for improved mood.
  6. Coping with Low Motivation: Strategies to address and overcome low motivation.
  7. Identifying Unhelpful Thoughts: Recognizing negative thought patterns and their impact.
  8. Challenging Unhelpful Thoughts: Techniques for challenging and reframing negative thoughts.
  9. Dealing with Loneliness: Addressing the challenges of loneliness and fostering connection.
  10. Problem Solving: Developing effective problem-solving skills.
  11. Improving Sleep: Exploring strategies for better sleep hygiene.
  12. Facing Fears and Dealing with Avoidance: Confronting fears and overcoming avoidance behaviors.
  13. Assertiveness and Communication: Building assertiveness skills and effective communication.
  14. Dealing with Loss and Bereavement: Navigating the complexities of loss and grief.
  15. Relapse Prevention: Strategies to prevent relapse and maintain positive mental health.

Workbook Inclusion: Each participant will receive a comprehensive workbook, included in the program fee, containing all the skills covered during the sessions. This workbook serves as a valuable resource, allowing individuals to continue practicing and reinforcing learned skills beyond the program.

We understand that investing in your mental well-being is a significant decision, and we aim to provide transparent information about the costs associated with our Ageing Wisely Group Program.

Workshop Fees: The cost for each workshop session is payable upfront, providing participants with access to a structured 12-week program designed to address feelings of worry and low mood.

Medicare Rebates: If you possess a GP mental health care plan and referral to our workshop, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate. This rebate is applicable for the first 10 group sessions attended in a calendar year, contingent upon at least three participants attending each group session. Rebates are processed the day after each session, in compliance with Medicare requirements.

Initial Session Requirement: If you are not a current client of our practice, an initial session with one of our psychologists is required to confirm that the Ageing Wisely Group Program aligns with your specific needs. Session fees range from $210 to $295, depending on your clinician's level of experience.

Health Partners Members: For Health Partners members, the total cost for the 12-week program is $850, which includes the workshop fee and a manual. This amount is payable in advance. Health Partners members may have the opportunity to claim rebates through Medicare or Private Health if they possess group rebates.

Non-Health Partners Members: For non-Health Partners members, the total cost for the 12-week program is $935, inclusive of the workshop fee and a manual. Similar to Health Partners members, this amount is payable in advance, and participants may explore claiming rebates through Medicare or Private Health if they have group rebates available.
